ROBERT J. “BOB” DAVIS

Robert J. “Bob” Davis passed away on June 30, 2021, at Avamere Memory Care Center in Roswell, New Mexico, just a week after his 74th birthday. He was born on June 23, 1947, in New Burnside, Illinois to Robert Davis and Wanda Tyler Davis. He was raised in Karnak, IL and attended schools in Perks and Karnak, IL. He joined the United States Army in 1966 at 19 years of age and served as a crew chief on a CH-47 Chinook helicopter. He was assigned to several different duty stations stateside, and was a member of the 101st Airborne at Fort Campbell, KY. He was stationed for 10 years in Germany and served in Viet Nam. After 22 years in the Army, Bob retired in 1988 at the rank of Sergeant First Class.

After retiring from the Army, he moved to Roswell, NM to be closer to his brother, Bill Davis, and joined the Roswell Police Department in 1988 where he worked as a police officer until 2001. It was at the RPD where he met his dearly loved wife, Jeannie Matson. They were married on October 20, 1989. In 2001 he went to work as a deputy for the Chaves County Sheriff’s Office until his retirement in 2009. He honorably and proudly served his country, and then his city, for over 43 years. He was an active member of the Roswell Elks Lodge BPOE 969 and was honored as their Veteran of the Year for the Elks Golf for Vets Tournament in 2018.

Bob is survived by his wife, Jeannie Davis, of the home in Roswell, NM; five children, Daniel Davis of San Diego, CA, Aaron Orsak (Cassandra) of Albuquerque, NM, Bobby Davis of Gilbert, AZ, Alexa Orsak Davis and Tracie Davis Neal; and 7 grandchildren; brothers, Bill Davis (Donna) of Roswell, NM, John Leonard (Cheryl) of Karnak, IL, Mike Leonard (Liz) and Toby Leonard (Tracy) of Metropolis, IL, two sisters, Pam Fletcher (John) of Metropolis, IL, Sherry Pritchard (Chris) of Murray, KY; his stepfather, Gene Leonard, of Metropolis, IL; niece, Ami Davis Moody (Thomas) of Roswell, NM, nephew, Craig Davis (Stephanie) of Rio Rancho, NM, and numerous other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Davis, mother, Wanda Leonard, and two brothers, Wayne Davis, and Clarence Leonard.

Per Bob’s wishes, no services are planned. The family would like to thank Bob’s caregivers at Avamere who loved and cared for him during his stay. Please know how touched we are by the kindness and compassion shown by each of you. We would also like to thank his nurses at Kindred Hospice.
