Letha Jay

September 23, 1926 — November 28, 2020

Letha Powell Jay, beloved Mother, was taken to be with her Lord on November 28,2020. She was born to James Walter and Rosie Powell on September 23,1926 in Stamford, Texas.

She was a charter member of Service League of Chaves County and remained active for many years. One of the first projects of Service League, that she was active with, was teaching disadvantaged children to swim. As they were a new service group, the only place they could teach the children to swim was the private swimming pool of Mrs. Olen Featherstone (Martha), who was also one of the charter members. Letha also spent 30 years of her life researching cancer, which she called Unified Solutions.

She loved to cook and was instrumental in joining her daughter in putting together a family cookbook, which included recipes from her mother, grandmother, sisters, aunts, nieces and many more family members. After getting all the recipes together, she named the cookbook “Family Favorite Desserts and a Few Other Things”!

Letha was also active in the day to day operations of her husband’s company, Jay Oldsmobile Cadillac Company.

She also loved to entertain and gave many parties and taught her daughter and nieces the art of setting the table correctly. She also taught us the art of making people feel at home.

Letha was preceded in death by her husband M. L. Jay, her son Kenneth L. Jay, a sister, a brother, and most of her friends. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Linda J. Hinkle and John T. Hinkle and two sisters, Shirley Kitchens and Myra Smith, both of Texas. Also surviving are her daughter-in-law Tina Jay, 3 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.

A small graveside service will celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Assurance Home, 1000 E. 18th St., Roswell, NM 88201, the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, PO Box 393 Hohenwald, TN 38462 or a charity of your choice.
