Obituary

Jane Ellen Patton

Jane Ellen Patton Martin, loving mother of four daughters, passed away at her home at the age of 88 surrounded by her family and loved ones. She was a true example of the definition of love, the greatest love of all. She was born in Houston, TX, on June 12, 1932, the middle child of parents Katharine and Hendley Kissinger Patton who preceded her in death.

Jane is survived by her loving husband Gabe of 67 years, daughter Sarah Jane Ogden of Albuquerque, NM, and her children Bethany Grow and Damon Ogden (wife Connie and son Thomas); daughter Katharine “Katy” Whitman of Roswell, NM, and her children Gabe Whitman and Tyler Whitman (wife Ani); daughter Mary Ellen Segovia and her husband Greg of Roswell, NM, and their children Summer Allen (husband Joshua and daughter August) and Gregory “Tres” Segovia III (wife Mariel) and daughter Susan K. Martin of Roswell, NM, and her dog Espe. She is also survived by her two brothers, Dr. John T. Patton and wife Maureen of El Paso, TX, and William F. Patton and wife Meredith of Atlanta, GA; her cousin Frances Patton Chisholm of Craig, CO; and her dear friend Kathleen Holmaas Drummond of Norman, OK, whom Jane called “my fifth” daughter. Jane was affectionately called “Gaga” by her six grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Gaga’s top priority was her family and she was always in the middle of their activities!

Jane was an Oklahoma City girl. Her passion was tennis where she held the state Doubles Championship title before graduating from Classen High School. She enrolled at Oklahoma A & M (now Oklahoma State Univ.) and pledged Pi Beta Phi. It was there she met her future husband, Gabe Martin, a Sigma Nu fraternity brother. They were married August 16, 1952, and shortly thereafter Gabe was deployed to the Korean War. After a brief time in Texas with Gulf Oil Company, Jane and Gabe eventually settled down in Roswell, NM, in 1957 where he still resides.

Jane will be remembered as a wonderful and very giving person who was always

there for others. Like her favorite movie, “Giant,” Jane was a giant in everyone's hearts. She was an avid sports enthusiast, always cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team and her Dallas Cowboys! Jane was past president of the Morning Garden Club, a 69 year member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, a lifetime member of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution), and active participant in her daughters' PTA programs, a member of the St. Andrews Women's church group, and an active member in the Roswell Tennis Association where she remained a formidable opponent for many years.

Jane was the proud owner of The Needle Fair, a knit and needlepoint boutique. She learned to knit at an early age and continued her love for knitting her entire life. She strived to excel at everything she was passionate about – at bridge, she always had her eye on the “quarter pot”; at poker, she was eager to take everyone's dollars; in golf, she was determined to get the lowest score; in mahjong, she always calculated the best tile to play; and in tennis, she hated to lose a point. Jane loved to spend her time cooking and baking her family’s favorite foods, and her gardening magic made for a beautiful yard and gorgeous roses.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the “Go Red For Women’s campaign” through the American Heart Association, Assurance Home Inc. or the charity of your choice. The family would like to thank the compassionate caregivers Rosana, Adriana, Anna and Nannette.
