Thelma Allensworth

October 27, 1925 — October 25, 2016

Mrs. Thelma Allensworth passed peacefully at her home on Tuesday October 25, 2016 in Roswell NM at the age of 90. Thelma was born in Pawnee Oklahoma on October 27, 1925 and had been a resident of Roswell NM since the age of 11. Both of her parents have preceded her in death.

A young Thelma first made her way to New Mexico around 1936 in an old Model A Ford, loaded up with family and possessions, they sought new opportunity in the Land of Enchantment. When Thelma was 17 an elderly neighbor from across the street was invited to live with the family. Thelma was mesmerized by the woman's ability to crochet, and seeing the young girl's interest, her neighbor fostered Thelma's curiosity. She had a natural knack for crocheting which developed over time into a mastery of technique and an unwavering passion for creating works of crochet art. Thelma made everything under the sun from crochet- the standard doilies were a given but her customizing works included ball gowns, poncho's, blankets of any color to match your home, and silk lined purses with matching coin pouches. Her repertoire was boundless and her time spent working on projects endless. She was a veracious reader preferring fiction and romance novels and a connoisseur of corn bread and beans.

Mrs. Allensworth spent much of her life working at home raising her children and keeping the family home functioning. A friend who delivered lunches for Roswell High School had told her about a job in the cafeteria and she jumped at the chance to be a part of the team. She spent 16 years in the cafeteria watching children grow up in her lunch line. She loved her coworkers and the time of fellowship spent between them. The staff would spend their lunch breaks crocheting together; she developed lifelong friends through jokes and loving banter, and cultivated many new relationships that she held dearly for the remainder of her life. She was a member of the Eagles and had many friends that she met through this wonderful organization.

Thelma was married for over 60 years to the love of her life and closest confidant Elbert Allensworth. They were both from Oklahoma with similar stories of traveling to New Mexico and during World War 2 he was sent to Normandy and Germany to fight. Once he returned the two would spend the rest of their lives inseparable until his passing on October 30, 2011. She loved Elbert deeply and she was his world too. Her family was her priority- they came always and forever, before and above, anything else. Her lasting legacy is the devotion to her husband, her children, and her relationship with her Lord and Savior Jesus.

Mrs. Thelma Allensworth is survived by her daughter Mary Ann Dubas and Harold of Riverside CA and son Daniel Allensworth of Roswell NM; grandsons Todd Dubas of Hobbs NM and Mark Dubas of Santa Monica CA. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Elbert Allensworth; brothers Delalous Shelton and Billy Joe Shelton; sister Mary Wright.
