Roswell

Shelia "Sharee" Hanes was born on May 26, 1964, in Lubbock, Texas, and passed away peacefully in Roswell, New Mexico, on May 3, 2026, at the age of 61.

Though born in Texas, Sharee's heart always belonged to New Mexico - the place she proudly called home throughout her life. Surrounded by lifelong friends, beloved family, students, and colleagues, she built a life rooted in love, laughter, and service to others. Spending time with her friends at monthly Bunco and Wine Wednesdays was a highlight she cherished and that brought her so much joy and happiness.

Known affectionately by many as "Miss Hanes," Sharee devoted 29 years of her life to education. Teaching was never simply a profession to her; it was her calling. She poured her heart into every classroom, every student, and every life she touched. Her legacy will continue to live on through the countless students she encouraged, inspired, and loved throughout the years. She had a way of uplifting others while staying grounded in her values, and that made her not only a remarkable educator, but also an admirable person.

To know Sharee was to experience her unmistakable spirit. She could light up any room with her vibrant personality, contagious laughter, and unwavering love for the people around her. She had a rare gift for bringing others together, making people feel seen, and creating joy in even the simplest moments. Her presence was larger than life, and the memories she created with those she loved will be cherished forever.

Sharee is survived by her son, Christopher Jay "CJ" McNeil and his partner, Michelle Hannahs; her sister, DeNiece "Niecy" Bradley and her partner, Tim Watts; nephew Lance Bradley and his wife, Alexandra, and their daughter, Vivian; niece Morgan Shafto and her husband, Robert, and their son, Beau; her brother, John Woods and his wife, Terri; nephew Adam Kenyon and his wife, Sandy, and their kids, Ayden and Makayla; and niece Kyla Gonzales and her husband, Roy, and their kids Isaiah and Gracen; niece Jennifer Hernandez, and nephew, Zachary Woods. She also leaves behind many beloved extended family members, dear friends, coworkers, former students, and members of the community who were touched by her kindness, humor, generosity, and love.

Her laughter, love, and light will be deeply missed, but the impact she made on those fortunate enough to know her will never be forgotten.

In accordance with Sharee's wishes, a private family celebration of life will be held on June 22nd 2026. In lieu of flowers or gifts, Sharee's family welcomes all who knew and loved her to honor her life by making a donation to support Sierra Middle School - a community and calling that meant so much to her.
