Sara Carter

Sara Danner Carter was born in Tuskegee, AL. on April 3, 1914 to Sallie Canning Mayes Danner and Albert Stevens Danner and passed away on Sunday, February 3, 2019 in Roswell, NM.

She attended the local schools where her mother taught high school and Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL., where her mother had also taught. In 1937 she moved to Roswell to teach junior high school English. In Roswell she met Alfred (Andy) Nathan Carter who taught at New Mexico Military Institute. They were married in Tuskegee on June 30, 1938. They had two children, Sara (Sally) Carter who married Gerald Woolwever and Harriet Carter who married Jeff A. Jenkins of Roswell, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Sara enjoyed life in Roswell with the interesting circle of Institute and other friends who talked of books, travel music and much more. She was a member of the Junior Book Club for many years, a member of the Shakespeare Club where she served as president, and of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. Sara became interested in bird watching with Andy and is interested in history, gardening and most any topic of conversation.

Good nature, cheerfulness, optimism, curiosity and intelligence characterize her. The twenty-five years she spent looking after her husband Andy as Parkinson's disease took over his life were years of devotion and an inspiration to others. She once said his illness gave her purpose in life and she kept him at home until a few days before his death in 1988. Sara lived in the house she and Andy built for 76 years. At the time the was built this was the edge of town with a great view of Capitan Mountain.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter Harriet Carter Jenkins; grandchildren Gary Woolweaver, Michael Taylor and Sara Jenkins; great grandchildren Rone Taylor, Nash Taylor, Sally Woolweaver and Bobby Woolweaver and great-great grandson Jax Taylor. Preceding her in death are her parents and her daughter Sally Carter Woolweaver.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am, Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church with Father Dale Plummer officiating. Burial will follow at South Park Cemetery.
