Paula Azel James, a devoted homemaker and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2026, in Roswell, New Mexico. Born on January 5, 1935, in Ithaca, New York, Paula lived a life defined by her unwavering love for God, family, and friends.

Throughout her life, Paula dedicated herself not only to her home but also to the service of others. Her generous spirit was evident in her volunteer work with Kids Closet at Good Sam's, her active participation in the Senior Olympics, and her membership in the Senior Circle. She was also a beloved member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, where she worshipped faithfully, and a valued singer with the Enchanters Choir at St. Peter's. Her faith and fellowship were central to her life, and she took great joy in the communal lunches after church, gathering with friends to share stories and laughter.

Paula's family was her pride and joy. She is lovingly remembered by her son Donald P. James and his wife, Andrea, daughters, Dawn Marie Schichtel, and Robin Fay Gibbs, along with Robin’s husband, Walter, they will all continue to honor her memory. She was a cherished grandmother to eleven grandchildren, a great-grandmother to twenty-three great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandmother to four, creating a rich legacy of love and connection that will endure across generations.

Paula was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald R. James, her daughter Mary Mitchel, and close family members including her parents, George Leonard and Helene Founier Leonard, as well as one granddaughter and one great-grandson. Though they have passed on, their memories remain a treasured part of Paula’s story.

Her presence enriched the lives of many, and she will be sorely missed by friends and family who admired her warmth, kindness, and steadfast faith. Paula Azel James leaves behind a legacy of devotion, generosity, and hospitality that serves as an inspiration to all who knew her. Her life, marked by humble service and deep love, will be fondly remembered and honored by all whose lives she touched.
