Maria Raquel Platt

Maria Raquel Platt passed away on Monday, November 27, 2023, she was born May 5, 1938 in El Encinal, Durango, Mexico to Salvador Cabrales and Rebecca Herrera. Maria married Kenneth H. Platt on December 19, 1968. They had one daughter, Lorraine, and decided to make Dexter, NM their lifelong home. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Dexter, NM. Her favorite pass times were spoiling her two grandsons, John Paul and Kenneth: cooking, baking, gardening and farming.

Maria was a beloved grandmother, mother, wife, sister, and aunt. After the passing of her mother Rebecca, Raquel became the matriarch of the family. She became a second mother to many of her nieces and nephews who she truly cherished. Maria loved her family so very much, just as they loved her beyond words. She will be missed beyond measure.

Maria is preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Platt; sisters Rita Chaidez, Anita Barraza, Blanca Cabrales, Cuca Cabrales; brothers Juan Angel Cabrales, Miguel Cabrales and Chava Cabrales.

Those left to cherish and honor her memory are her daughter Lorraine Platt and fiancé Michael Berry; grandchildren John Paul and Kenneth Velarde of Dexter, NM; brother Lupe Cabrales and wife Lucila of El Encinal, Durango, Mexico; sisters Reyna Chaidez and husband Magdaleno of Roswell, NM and Alicia Avila of Dallas, TX and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the various caregivers of the last few years, especially Lety Hernandez, who took such loving care of Raquel. Thank you to the hospice nurses for their support as well.

A viewing was held from 2:00 to 6:00 pm, Thursday, November 30, 2023 at Ballard Funeral Home with a rosary that followed at 6:00 pm. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, December 1, 2023 at St. John’s Catholic Church with burial to follow at South Park Cemetery.

Honored to serve as pallbearers are John Paul Velarde, Kenneth Velarde, Magdaleno Chaidez, Eladio Chaidez, Junior Chaidez and Oscar Cabrales.
