Manuel Torrez

Manuel Silverio Torrez- 97 years old was born November 18, 1921 to Martin and Isabel Torrez in Hondo, NM. He is preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Josephine; grandson Vincent Espinosa (late son of Louise and Gilbert) and daughter-in-law Angie Torrez (late wife of Markus). Manuel was number six in a family of 12 siblings, the late Fred Torrez (Cecelia), the late Eloy Torrez (Savina), the late Ignacio Torrez (Amanda), the late Minnie Montes (Clovis), the late Julia Oteto (Johnny), surviving Eva Jimenez (Raymond), the late Rosalia Torrez, the late Preciliana Richardson (Robert), the late Libby Austin Zamora, surviving Patsty Turner (Bill) and surviving Martin Larry Torrez (Dorothy).

Manuel is also survived by sons Michael (Marsha) Martin and Markus and daughters Priscilla Rowe (James), Sylvia Amparan (Victor) and Louise Espinosa (Gilbert). Grandchildren include Debbie Dumlao, Jeff Rowe (Kirsten), Taylor Rowe (Tina), Casimira Rowe, Alejandro Amparan, Santiago Amparan (Daniella), Victor Amparan, Andrew Espinosa (Sara) and Rebecca Espinosa. Manuel was also blessed with 11 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Growing up in the Hondo Valley, Manuel worked in the orchards. He graduated from Hondo High and was the last surviving member of the state bound basketball team of 1942. He then joined the Army and was a WWII veteran. He continued working at Kirkland base in the civil service. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping with which lots of memories and great stories were created. Manuel will be remembered by family and friends as kind hearted, caring and always willing to lend a helping hand. He lived a full 97 years!

Serving as pallbearers are Manuel's nephew Presiliano Torrez, Bobby Richardson, Ray Torrez Joe Torrez, Rudy Otero, Mario Otero, Ray Jimenez, Matthew Torrez and Mike Torrez. Honorary pallbearer are Eloy Torrez, Marty Otero, Dick Austin, Steve Austin, Marty Torrez, and David Turner

A viewing will be held from 5 pm to 6 pm at Ballard Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 with a rosary to follow at 6 pm. A mass will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at St. Jude Mission Catholic Church, on Hwy 70, San Patricio, NM with burial to follow at Hondo Cemetery.
