| lost my grandma yesterday, and as with all loss, it was painful to say goodbye. That being said, not many people make it to 90. I was very fortunate to have as much time as I had, we all were. She was stubborn, quirky, and blunt. She was fiercely independent, like seriously she was still climbing on the roof well into her 80s. She liked to do silly dances, and sing songs of worship as well as her own little tunes. My grandma adored her family and friends. She loved waking up every morning to go to church. She and my dad would go for breakfast every morning these last few years to get a kolache and coffee. My grandma told crazy stories that to our surprise held more truth than expected. She liked to lick the community serving spoon at parties and eat off my plate while simultaneously telling me I need to eat more. She was special, and unique, and a little crazy at times but she was so wonderful. And she deserves to be known and shared. She fought her whole life to survive. To thrive independently in a time when that was not the norm and proved to be extremely difficult. She made her own life, forged her own path. She had incredible strength, courage, and resilience. I've learned many things from her even though my knowledge of her life is extremely limited. Looking at her old photos fills my heart with so much joy and wonder. She looks like a completely different person. I often wonder who she was. What were her hopes and dreams? What did her daily existence entail? And while the truths to these questions ascended along with my grandma, I don't feel sorrow in the absence of those revelations. Her life was hers to experience. She shared what she wanted to and I accepted that. It was a great privilege to know and love her.
My grandma and her oldest sister passed within 15 minutes of each other on the same day. I like to think my grandma and her sister were holding hands as they began their journey to the Great Beyond. Just two little girls free of pain and worry. Free to just be.
Until we meet again Gram, I'll love you always!
