Jay D “Bullet” Standefer, 87 years old, passed away at home in Roswell, NM on March 15, 2020.

He was born April 30, 1932 in Morton, TX to the home of Faye and James Clayton Standefer.

Bullet lost his father at the age of 12 years old.  He began working in the oilfields and ranches before joining the United States Air Force in February of 1952.  While in the Air Force he served in Greenland, Seymour, Indiana, and Memphis, Tennessee. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force in February of 1956.  He then started work at Canon Air Force Base as a firefighter until he retired as fire chief in 1982. Bullet then moved to Roswell, NM and started a new hobby of owning racehorses and watching them run. He married his wife Mary Lou in 1995, and they enjoyed breeding and raising quarter horses. Together they loved their horses and seeing them race. Bullet and Mary Lou were very proud to have four state champions. He loved animals and always had a dog by his side.  You could always hear him singing or whistling a tune.

Bullet was baptized at Calvary Baptist Church in Portales, NM.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents, two brothers and two sisters; James “Bud” Standefer, Joe Bob Standefer, Evelyn Ellis, and Anna Faye Lee.

Bullet is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Standefer, four children; Brenda Brady and husband Dan, Steve Standefer, Bruce Standefer and wife Kathy Jo, and Jay Don Standefer.  He has seven grandchildren; Kristy, Tasha, Holly, Lauren, Trace, Derek, Jared, and 13 great grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters; Betty Lou Moore, Billy Joe Allen, and Jimmie Starr.  He has many nephews, nieces, and friends who will also miss him dearly.
