Jaunita Sultemeier-Shanks

Jaunita of Roswell, New Mexico and Corona, New Mexico passed away, Tuesday, January 1, 2019.

Jaunita was known for the beautiful jewel toned quilts she made and her love of the sheep they raised. Jaunita was born in Anadarko, Oklahoma to John Porter Leary and Ruby Flora Shahan Leary on December 17,1923. She had one sister, Ovada Cuthbertson, who all preceded her in death.

Jaunita married Clint L. Sultemeier on April 17,1942. Three children were born to them, LaVada JoEtta Turner of Bloomfield, NM, Clint Leary Sultemeier and wife Lee of Corona, NM and Lonnie Frank Sultemeier and wife Linda of Melrose, NM.

After the passing of her husband Clintie, August 20,1983, she moved to Roswell, NM. On April 23, 2003 she married Carol Shanks, who passed away June 18,2004. She was also preceded in death by son-in-law Fred Lee Turner (Joetta); grandson Justin Turner and great grandsons Rhett Robertson and Shawn Gallimore-Turner.

In addition to her children, she is survived by 8 grandchildren, Zana Crawford and husband Mitch, Marcy Robertson, Cody Turner, Tammy McDougall, Emmet Sultemeier and wife Heather, Christie Pittman and husband Bill Jack, Kelli Modesette and husband Greg, and Ashley Good and husband T.J.; 22 great grandchildren and 8 great great-grandchildren.

Jaunita was a member of the Corona Presbyterian Church, United Methodist Church of Roswell, Corona Extension Club, New Mexico Cowbelles, and New Mexico Wool Growers.

The family would like to give a special thanks to all the caregivers at Avamere for their love and care.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to The Corona NM Cemetery Fund.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, January 4, 2019 at Corona New Mexico Cemetery with Rev. Marvin Pounds officiating. Dinner will follow at the Corona Recreation Room.
