Obituary

George Herrington, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, went home to his heavenly Father on November 3, 2026. Born on December 18, 1931, in Portales, NM, George was the son of Henry and Lilly Myrtle Griffin Herrington. He lived a life full of love, laughter, and devotion to his family and faith, and now, we gather to celebrate the incredible legacy he leaves behind. He was the definition of lead by example.

As a lifelong member of Bethel Baptist Church for over 45 years, George's faith guided his life and inspired those around him. He dedicated many years to the Coca Cola Company as a mechanic, after which he found joy driving school buses for the Roswell Independent School District, impacting the lives of countless children. George had a passion for the outdoors, especially when it came to caring for his cherished pecans, and his warm spirit kept him busy supporting his family's many activities, attending ball games for his grandkids and great-grandkids, always ready with popcorn to share.

George was a true hero and role model, embodying the definition of love and kindness. He cherished his companion, Mary Herrington, and is survived by his sons Mike Herrington, Jake (Sandy) Schmid, Ivan (Beverly) Schmid, Wayne Schmid, and Curtis Schmid, daughters Charlene (Earl) Eakin and Lora (Fred) Richardson, brothers Joe Herrington and Wayne Herrington, and an incredible legacy of 18 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 30 great-great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by beloved family members, including his father Henry Herrington, mother Lilly Myrtle Herrington, wife Shirley Herrington, daughter-in-law Cheryl Herrington, son Milt Herrington, daughter-in-law Vicki Herrington, granddaughter Marilea Schmid, grandson Joe Herrington and many others.

A celebration of George's life will be held on Nov. 14, 2026 at 10:00 am, at South Park Cemetery, for a Graveside Service. Family and friends are invited to join us as we share stories, memorable moments, and the love that George poured into our lives. Those honored to be pallbearers include his grandsons: Mike Herrington, Alex Herrington, Scott Herrington, Brandon Herrington, Kevin Herrington, Rodney Eakin, Milt Herrington, and Matthew Schmid. Additionally, we are grateful for our honorary pallbearers who have been an important part of George's life: Jesus Ramirez, Steven Kennedy, Colt Richardson, Michael Lemon, Jesse Richardson, Johnny Gray, Clayton Schmid, Kristy Ramirez, Dusty Murray, Mariann Newman, and Sabrina Sigala.

In celebrating George's life, we reflect on the man he was-a God-fearing individual whose love will continue to resonate in all of us. Let us come together to honor his memory in joyful remembrance, as we carry his spirit forward in our hearts. We will miss him dearly, but we rejoice in the everlasting love he shared.
