Ellen Whitmore, formerly of Roswell, New Mexico, passed away peacefully in Albuquerque, New Mexico on June 15, 2018 surrounded by family after a lengthy battle with breast cancer. She was born October 27, 1929 in Temple, Texas to Simon and Elizabeth Wolff and grew up in Ft. Worth, Texas. Ellen was preceded in death by her beloved husband Walter, by her loving son Victor Whitmore, and by her two brothers Robert Wolff and David Wolff. She is survived by her two loving sons: Wayne and wife Darlene Whitmore of Las Vegas, Nevada and Karl and wife Sharon Whitmore of Albuquerque, New Mexico; eight grandchildren: Jonathan, Daniel, Jackson, Bryan, Aaron, Lincoln, Charles, and Lauren; two great-grandchildren: Hudson and Zeth; her sisters-in-law Marion Wolff and Roberta Wolff; nieces Susan Donohue and Frieda Wolff-Mays who she helped raise and thought of as daughters; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
Ellen graduated from Texas Women's University in 1951 and moved to Roswell, New Mexico to teach where she met and married Walter Whitmore Jr. After marrying Walter she threw her energies into raising their three sons. Once her children were older she returned to school and became a nurse. She worked at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center until she retired. She was an avid golfer, swimmer, water skier, snow skier, bowler, card player and participated in Senior Olympics. During her married life, and in retirement, she enjoyed traveling to far off places in Europe, China, and Australia. She will always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose greatest passion was helping others.
A graveside service will be held at South Park Cemetery, 3101 S. Main St, Roswell, NM 88203, on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at 9 am.
