Donald Ray Tyler

February 1, 1947 – November 11, 2024

Donald Ray Tyler, 77, of Hagerman, passed away on November 11, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones. Born to Thurman Tyler and Goldie Scates-Tyler on February 1, 1947, in Roswell, New Mexico, Don was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and joy that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Don was the loving husband of Joan Tyler, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage. Together, they built a beautiful family, and Don’s greatest joy in life was his wife, daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was proud of the family they created and cherished every moment spent with them.

A man of many passions, Don lived life to the fullest. He loved the outdoors—whether it was hunting with friends, fishing, or enjoying the thrill of drag racing and rodeo. He was always in his element when he was with family and friends, and his laughter and stories never failed to bring a smile to anyone in his presence.

In 1993, Don was diagnosed with cancer in his left hand, which led to the loss of that hand. Yet, his strength and resilience were evident, and he continued to move forward in life with unwavering determination. He spent over 20 years as the owner of G&T Roofing, never letting his setback slow him down. He worked tirelessly and with great pride, earning the respect and admiration of all who knew him.

Don was a master of making people laugh. Whether it was telling jokes, sharing stories, or simply enjoying the company of those around him, he had a natural ability to brighten any room. He was especially fond of the rodeo days with his daughters when they were younger and cherished weekends spent racing at the dirt track, surrounded by family and friends.

In his later years, when his health began to slow him down, Don found comfort in his daily phone calls from his cousins Roger and Bubba, who kept his spirits high and reminded him of the deep bonds of family and friendship.

Don was a man of simple pleasures—making biscuits and gravy on Saturday mornings, filling the freezer with game from hunting trips, and always keeping a positive attitude no matter the circumstances. His love for his family and his zest for life are qualities that will never be forgotten.

Donald was preceded in death by his daughter Lisa Carol Tyler; his parents, Thurman and Goldie Tyler; and his siblings, Lou Etta Hignight, Tom Homer Tyler, Earl Alvin Tyler, Harrell Henson Tyler, Callie Bell Herring, and Iona Pearl Ketchell.

He is survived by his devoted wife Joan Edwina Tyler; his daughter Sharina Rae Cureton and her husband David Earl Cureton of Waco; his grandchildren Donald John Cureton of Waco, Reanna Rae Cureton and her husband William Blane Onstott of Waco, and Taylor Rae Lilly and her husband Seth Ryan Lilly of Hagerman; his great-grandchildren Paisley Rae Lilly, McCoy Ryan Lilly, and David Cole Onstott; his siblings Mary Ann Rogers, Maudie Faye Mahan, Annie May Stroble, and Aubrey Tyler; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, November 15, 2024, at 10:00 AM at Christ Church of Roswell, 2200 N Sycamore Ave, Roswell, NM 88232. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Christ Church of Roswell, or simply take a moment to share a story and a laugh in his honor.

Donald Ray Tyler’s memory will live on through his family, friends, and the many lives he touched with his humor, love, and indomitable spirit. May he rest in peace, knowing he was loved beyond measure.
