Carolyn Syska

August 15, 1927 — February 11, 2020

Carol was born August 15, 1927 on the Turkey Track Ranch east of Lake Arthur, NM, the youngest of the 5 children of Luther Thomas and Ola May Alexander. She passed away on February 11, 2020 in the Loveless Regional Hospital in Roswell, NM at the age of 92.

She attended school in Lake Arthur, Artesia and on a ranch outside of those towns until she moved with her parents to California in 1942, while she was in 11th grade. There she met John Simon Syska and they were married in Long Beach, CA (1945-1952). Their son John was born in 1949. She worked for BJ Service, Inc., an oil well service company, in Long Beach, CA (1952-1959), while she and her son John were living with her parents in Lakewood. She visited her brother Jack and his family in Los Alamos, NM in 1958 and thought that would be a wonderful place to raise her son. She, John and her parents then moved to Los Alamos in 1959 where she worked until her retirement. After retirement she and John moved to Roswell to join her sister Pauline Whisenhunt.

Carol was a firm believer in UFOs and for many years she worked with the UFO Museum in Roswell, enjoying some time as the Director of the Museum. She was also heavily involved with the rock club there and participated in many outings collecting rock samples from much of the West. Other interests and hobbies of Carol’s were genealogy, skiing, square dancing, playing cards, western music and reading (primarily historical novels).

In Carol’s own words: “I am a Christian and try to live my life as such. I have belonged to a Church for as long as I can remember. I learned to lean on God, and He played a very large and important part in my life. I just have to maintain my faith in Him and accept whatever comes.”

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, her two sisters and two brothers, and is survived by her son John and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. She will be much missed by John and the rest of her many family and friends.
