Oscar Holguin

August 16, 1930 – November 24, 2019

A rosary will be held at 9:30 am, Saturday, November 30, 2019 at St. John’s Catholic Church for Oscar R. Holguin, 89, who passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2019 in Roswell. Visitation will be held from 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Friday, November 29, 2019 at Ballard Funeral Home.

Oscar was born August 16, 1930 in Saucillo, Chihuahua Mexico to Martin Holguin and Julia Reyes Holguin, who have preceded him in death. He is also preceded in death by his brother Roberto Holguin and sister Alicia Carrasco.

Oscar came to the United States in 1955 as a contract laborer on the Bracero Act. He retired as a farm laborer having worked 45 years on the John Weir Farm. Oscar had a green thumb that could grow anything - his yards and gardens are a testament to his ability to cultivate life. With his laid back and gentle demeanor, those who met Oscar were quick to love the person he was. His smile and dancing green eyes could rapidly light up a room. Some of Oscar's favorite pastimes were watching horror movies and novellas, collecting unique antiques, cooking out, and spending time with his loved ones.

Oscar married Maria December 21, 1996 in Roswell, NM. He was a devoted Catholic who attended St. John’s Catholic Church and will be dearly missed by his new-found friends at Casa Maria and those who loved him. To know Oscar was to love him.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Maria Antonia Holguin; daughters Katrina Holguin (Albuquerque), Gretchen Jaramillo (Roswell), Clara Rodriguez/Roy (Roswell) and Margaret Greenhill (Alto); sons Joseph Haywood/Flo (Phoenix) and Jesus Saenz/Gina (Virginia Beach); brothers Francisco Holguin, Ernesto Holguin and Martin Holguin; sisters Luz Carrasco and Stella Medrano; grandchildren Marty Apodaca, Brianna Jaramillo, Tim Holguin, Monica Kellam, Becky Barela, Lionel Barela, Raelyn Barela Inselmann, Richard Rodriguez, Ana-Alycia Rodriguez, Eryca Hoggatt, Eryn Key and Emilio Saenz.
