Rachel Prichard Halliburton
A memorial service is scheduled for 3:00 p.m., Friday, March 5, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church for Rachel Evelyn Halliburton, 94, of Roswell, who passed away March 1, 2010. Dr. Hugh Burroughs will officiate.
Rachel was born February 16, 1916 to James Harrison and Verna Allison Prichard at Woodson, Texas. At the age of 13 she moved with her family to Dexter. She graduated from Dexter High School and from New Mexico Highlands University with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Her family moved to Roswell in 1935.
On July 5, 1938, Rachel married James Waymon Maloney in San Jon, New Mexico. They were the parents of Norma Lou Maloney Cantrell and James Richard ‘Dick’ Maloney. The couple taught school in Madrid and Santa Fe. In 1947, Rachel returned to Roswell and taught at Washington Avenue. For six years, Rachel lived in Folly Beach, Bamberg and Orangeburg, South Carolina, where she was engaged in the food catering business.
In 1953, she returned to Roswell and resumed her career in education. In 1956, Rachel married Richard Elmer Halliburton on December 21st. After a wonderful life of ten years together, Richard died in 1966 of cancer. He was retired from the United States Air Force.
Rachel was a retired teacher with the Roswell School District, where she dedicated her life to working with children and families. She taught at Highlands Elementary, South Junior High, Mesa Junior High and Sierra Junior High. In 1979, Rachel and her sister Norma Prichard went to Europe: “Down the Rhine in ’79,” and enjoyed all the wonderful sites. The trip was a highlight for her, since she was a lifetime geography teacher, who also enjoyed history and politics.
She was a very active member for 57 years of the First Presbyterian Church, serving in numerous capacities from Sunday school teacher to Deacon. Rachel was also a volunteer at St Mary Hospital Auxiliary. She loved to dance and was a long time member of Enchanted Square Dance Club. When she retired, Rachel began golfing with a passion and became an active member of the New Mexico Military Ladies Golf Association. She had two hole-in-ones for bragging rights. Rachel loved working in her yard and gardening; and was a superb China painter winning many ribbons at the Eastern New Mexico State Fair.
Rachel is survived by a daughter, Norma Lou Cantrell and her husband, Randall Cantrell, of Spring, Texas; and son, James Richard ‘Dick’ Maloney and his wife, Mary Frances Jennings Maloney, of Roswell. Seven grandchildren and spouses: Jeffrey James Maloney and wife, Helen; Sally Maloney Goebel, and husband, Byron; Gregory Maloney and wife, Renee; Andrew Maloney, and wife, Jessica; Wiley Maloney; Todd Spengeman and wife, Darla; and Laura Spengeman. Thirteen great grandchildren: Jeffrey James II, Kayley and Michell Maloney; Allison and Sarah Goebel; Haden, Gavin, Rilan and Tegin Maloney; Grant Maloney; and Madison Dictson-Maloney Trevor and Riley Spengeman
Other survivors include nephew Barry Prichard and his wife, Brenda; and grand niece Breann Prichard
Preceding her in death were Rachel’s parents; sister, Norma Marie Prichard; brothers, Harrison C. ‘Jack’ Prichard, and James E Prichard. Rachel is survived by a much loved sister-in-law, Elsa Prichard of Vacaville, CA, wife of James E Prichard; and stepson, Richard E. Halliburton Jr. and family of Houston.
Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Maloney, Gregory Maloney, Andrew Maloney, Wiley Maloney, Todd Spengeman, Barry Prichard, Byron Goebel, and JJ Maloney.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Madie Sansoucile and Dan Gomez.
The family would like to thank the numerous friends who brighten her days with visits, phone calls, flowers, food, and cards. Also we are so appreciative to Roswell Hospice and Comfort Keepers for their wonderful care to our mother during the past few months.
